Following the success of our first film night, the Worlington Picture House (AKA East Worlington Parish Hall) is opening its doors again on Friday 20th May for the oscar-nominated Belfast. BelfastKenneth Branagh, who grew up in Belfast, directs this semi-autobiographical and poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy’s childhood, just at the onset of the Troubles. Filmed mainly in black and white, with some flashes of colour. It’s emotionally affecting but warm enough to be a crowd-pleaser, and Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds are delightful as Buddy’s grandparents. What the critics say“There is a terrific warmth and tenderness to Kenneth Branagh’s elegiac, autobiographical movie about the Belfast of his childhood: spryly written, beautifully acted and shot in a lustrous monochrome, with set pieces, madeleines and epiphanies that feel like a more emollient version of Terence Davies. Some may feel that the film is sentimental or that it does not sufficiently conform to the template of political anger and despair considered appropriate for dramas about Northern Ireland and the Troubles. And yes, there is certainly a spoonful of sugar (or two) in the mix, with some mandatory Van Morrison on the soundtrack.” The Guardian “Branagh has an easy way with a camera and isn’t afraid of sentiment, but he offsets this with a good line in comedy that cuts through the softer stuff like an astringent. . . Although this community would go on to be largely defined by strife in the eyes of the world for many years to follow, Branagh makes sure that what we chiefly feel is the love.” Eye for Film “Dench, like the whole cast, is irresistible.” Evening Standard Worlington Picture House Poster |

Parish Hall Improvement – Internet Connectivity
|
While retaining its heritage value and historic charm the facilities available at the Parish Hall has moved into the 21st Century with the installation of internet connectivity. This project was driven forward by a small group of community volunteers, for which we thank and express our appreciation, and installed by OpenReach on a BT contract. The project was completed on 24th December 2021. The installation of the necessary infrastructure and equipment allows access to the internet which improves the facilities available for users. |

Fete and Community Celebration Events – A Special Thank You
|
We wondered if it could ever happen. Would the rules change again? Would we be rained off? Would we dare venture into the real world once more? In the event those two wonderful reunions – first the fete and then the community celebration – both came off in true Worlington style. And once again we need to thank Campie and Barnabas for leading the way, making it all happen and allowing us all to enjoy their beautiful garden. As churchwardens, we just wanted to express our own gratitude on behalf of the PCC for Campie’s special energy in making this year’s fete not just a fantastic community get-together, but a brilliant fundraiser for our two churches. In spite of all the hurdles, this year’s event looks as though it will exceed the tally of the last fete in 2019. It will make a vital contribution to our work in keeping the churches open, active and in the best repair. And we also wanted to thank the many friends and supporters who made cakes, distributed teas, manned the stalls, donated prizes, shifted chairs, organized races, orchestrated the Worly Bargains and counted the money. Worlington is back! With many thanks from Ray, Patrick, Charles and all the PCC members. |
