Conservation and Improvement 2015-17

Conservation and Improvement 2015-17

East Worlington Parish Hall Committee, supported by our community, have been working to plan and raise sufficient funds to make improvements to and conserve our Parish Hall as an important community facility. The on-site work for this activity started in October 2015 and comprised three main phases:

  1. the alterations to the floor
  2.  the re-thatching
  3. the internal roof work and commissioning the heating and improved electrics

Stages of the work are shown in the Heritage Diary:

  • Rerouting the electric supply
  • Volunteers Clearing the Hall
  • Lifting the Old Hall Floor
  • Removing Sub Floor
  • Asbestos removal
  • Parish Hall rethatching starts
  • Parish Hall rethatching completed

During the lifting of the old hall floor a number of circular plugs about 2cm in diameter were seen in many of the boards near the old stage and front doors. Phillip Risdon remembered that the hall was flooded sometime in the 1960s and in order to drain the water away quickly to prevent the floor being damaged the holes were drilled to allow the water to escape into the underfloor void and subsequently out through the air vents at the base of the walls.

After the old flooring had been removed and before the new flooring work started heritage group members investigated the original hall floor and the informal outcomes of their work is presented on the Report on the Parish Hall Floor Investigation page.
