The EWPH web site is built using WordPress which is a system that allows multiple people to create and edit web pages without knowing about the underlying web technologies. originally WordPress was created to simplify publishing blog posts but evolved to support traditional web site feature written as web pages. WordPress is implemented using PHP (a programming language) and MySQL (a database).
The web site is hosted by Heart Internet and was chosen in 2015 as it had consistently won best ISP awards for several years but has never won never since then.
Login credentials are not provided here to help improve site security, contact the web site administrator at for more information about logging into the ISP account or the web site itself.
Essentially the web site is self maintaining and there are no activities that must be undertaken apart from paying the hosting fees (described on the Web Site Management page).
This page briefly introduces some activities that currently take place to keep the web site relevant.
Web Site Management on Heart Internet
A Web Site Management page contains information about renewing the ewph.uk domain, managing email distribution lists and database administration.
WordPress
The WordPress system will automatically update on a regular basis and should look after itself.
Plugins
The plugins we use are set to update automatically and our usage of them is described on the EWPH Plugin Bestiary page.
The plugins used are amongst the most popular of the free ones in the WordPress community. Most plugins are developed by a team of people or a have paid for (pro) versions with extra functionality which we don’t need and the free versions are expected to continue to be maintained and updated at no cost.
However it is possible a plugin may stop being maintained in which case it will need removing or replacing at some point. Typically an unsupported plugin will continue to work for a couple of years or more and usually only needs to be replaced if a new version of WordPress is in compatible or the web site has to be moved to a newer version of PHP (see Web Site Management).
Web site sections
We have arranged the web site into four sections:
- Parish Hall – information about the East Worlington Parish Hall and management committee.
- Community – information about the East and West Worlington area
- Heritage – historical information relating to the are including a document archive and photo archive (old photos and information supplied by local residents)
- Event Posts – we use the blog features to store a record of events taking place in the hall and local community
Most of the web site pages can be considered stable and only require updating should someone report a problem or want changes to correct or remove information.
Additional pages and information can be added to any of the sections.
The primary areas that are updated are detailed in the following sections.
Front page
The front page is used to display upcoming events and give quick access to the main sections of the web site. The process of updating the front page is described on the EWPH Front Page Maintenance page.
Committee pages
The following pages will need periodic updates:
- Parish Hall Committee page lists the current committee members, optional contact details and roles
- Managing Committee Documents describes how to add meeting minutes and other documents to the web site
- Accounts need to be linked individually on this page: upload the accounts to Media Library Folders under parish-hall/accounts
- Annual Reports are automatically added to the table on this page: upload reports to the Media Library Folders under parish-hall/reports
Riverside and Other Major Events
Typically each year thee is a Riverside music event which is always shown on the https::ewph.uk/riverside page. Notes on how to update the both before and after the event itself are desicribed on the Managing Riverside and Other Events page.
