Schooling Before 1870s – Some Facts

The first recorded schoolmaster was R Sleep.
The schoolmaster in 1861 was John Francis Lemon
John Francis Lemon trained as a teacher at St Luke’s Training College in Exeter
In 1818 Select Committee Report on Education of the Poor stated the there were two schools in East Worlington and that the children were educated in reading and the catachism. 
In 1818 There was no school recorded in West Worlington
East Worlington in 1833 had a Pop. of 292. In1833 the Report there were two Daily Schools with 28 pupils and about equal number of sexes. Parents pay the cost of attending the school.
West Worlington in 1833 had aPop. of 186 with 6 males and 10 females instructed at the expense of their parents.
West Worlington in 1833 the was one Sunday School of 4 males and 8 females. Supported by the Rector. Had a small library attached.
The school in East Worlington was held in the building known as the Church House
