The history group collect and collate photographs of local buildings, people and events and store the original pictures in the photo archive in East Worlington Parish Hall.
An ongoing task is to scan in all of these archive pictures for display online, and to collect additional physical or digital photographs from residents who wish to share them with the community – historic images are particularly welcome.

If you can supply additional information about any of these images of have photographs of your own that you wish to share with the community then please conact the history group using the Contact Form in the menu or email history@ewph.uk.

Below are archive images that, in some way, refer to people. Click or tap any image to see a larger version.
Change the display order using the up/down triangles at the top of each column.

You can search the archive using the Search box at the top right of the list: enter a few words to display only those pictures whose title or description contain the words you enter.

Rull Farm Pre First World War

Although we do not have a name for the person in this photograph we can use information in the census records to make a good guess - but it is only a guess.

Assuming the photograph is taken sometime between 1880 and 1914 and the man in question is late middle age (say 45+) then the most likely candidate is Joseph Western (b 1846 in Halberton, Tiverton).

Joseph was working as a horseman on Rull Farm in 1901 (age 55) and his cart of, presumably stable straw and muck, fits with his occupation. Joseph Western does not appear in any othe East Worlington census records, nor does a Joseph Western born in Devon appear in any census records for England and Wales from 1841-1921 - make of that what you will.

Looking at occupants of Rull Farm and Rull Farm Cottage for men of a suitable age in the years 1880-1914 there is only one other candidate and that is  John Lake (b 1853, age 48 in 1901) the tennant farmer or owner at Rull Farm.

Date: 1901 (uncertain)

Stephen John Troake

Stephen John Troake (of Rull Farm) in WWII uniform.

Stephen was born in 1917 the son of Walter and Frances Lily Troake of Rull Farm, East Worlington. His father and younger brother lived and worked at Rull Farm and his elder brother ran his own farm near Torrington.

He was a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Force serving with 72 Squadron Bomber Command (stationed at Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorks) flying Halifax V Bombers, The Squadron was commanded by Wing Commander G Leonard Cheshire in 1942/43.

Stephen Troake died aged 26 years on the 22nd November 1943. It is believed that he was shot down by a Night Fighter, near Wiesloch, 10 miles south of Heidelberg, during a raid on Frankfurt. 3 members of the crew survived and were captured.

He is buried in Durnhach Military Cemetery south of Munich in joint grave ref No: 6 E 15/16.
