House on left foreground possible clockmaker.

The packhorse bridge at Drayford is marked on Donne's Map of 1765 but dated from long before that.  It carried the "Great Road to Exeter" from South Molton in those days. In 1811 a special rate was levied on properties for the repair of Drayford and Worlington Bridges.  It was so narrow that, as the photo shows, carts had to use the ford.

Although we do not have a name for the person in this photograph we can use information in the census records to make a good guess - but it is only a guess.

Assuming the photograph is taken sometime between 1880 and 1914 and the man in question is late middle age (say 45+) then the most likely candidate is Joseph Western (b 1846 in Halberton, Tiverton).

Joseph was working as a horseman on Rull Farm in 1901 (age 55) and his cart of, presumably stable straw and muck, fits with his occupation. Joseph Western does not appear in any othe East Worlington census records, nor does a Joseph Western born in Devon appear in any census records for England and Wales from 1841-1921 - make of that what you will.

Looking at occupants of Rull Farm and Rull Farm Cottage for men of a suitable age in the years 1880-1914 there is only one other candidate and that is  John Lake (b 1853, age 48 in 1901) the tennant farmer or owner at Rull Farm.
