Flying Officer Geoffrey Maddock 163893

Born in Lancashire in 1923 the son of Revd William Humberstone Maddock and Marie Maddock. Revd Maddock was Rector of West Worlington from 1942—1960.

Geoffrey married in 1944, and lived in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Geoffrey was a Flying Officer pilot with Royal Air Force Volunteer Foree, later flying with the elite Glider Pilot Regiment, formed in 1942.

On 24 March 1945 Operation Varsity took place jointly with British/American personnel. Several thousand aircraft, and more than 16,000 troops took part in the largest single airborne operation in history flown on a single day and one location. Flying Officer Geoffrey William Maddock died on that day.

He is buried at Reichswald Cemetery, Kleve, Germany: the largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the country. He lies in section 21 row G Plot 14. Aged just 22yrs.
