Reference Information:

In the C13th the parish that is now East Worlington was three parishes, West Worlington Parish, East Worlington Parish and Affeton Parish. Affeton originally came in to existence during the C13th with a church and village when a small community had sprung up around the de Affeton family. The parishes of Affeton and West Worlington were merged in 1439 John de Affeton, the patron of both parishes, obtained permission from the Bishop of Exeter to combine them, allowing for one church and one priest. Affeton Church was designated as a chapel associated with the house (Affeton Castle). A detailed account of the history of Affeton was provided by Sir Dennis Stucley in 1976 when he made the Presidential Address at the Devonshire Association meeting in Bideford. A transcript record of the Address is provided in the PDF document attached to this record.
