Worlington Film Night Friday 20th May 2022

Worlington Film Night Friday 20th May 2022

Following the success of our first film night, the Worlington Picture House (AKA East Worlington Parish Hall) is opening its doors again on Friday 20th May for the oscar-nominated Belfast.

Belfast

Kenneth Branagh, who grew up in Belfast, directs this semi-autobiographical and poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy’s childhood, just at the onset of the Troubles. Filmed mainly in black and white, with some flashes of colour.

It’s emotionally affecting but warm enough to be a crowd-pleaser, and Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds are delightful as Buddy’s grandparents.

What the critics say

“There is a terrific warmth and tenderness to Kenneth Branagh’s elegiac, autobiographical movie about the Belfast of his childhood: spryly written, beautifully acted and shot in a lustrous monochrome, with set pieces, madeleines and epiphanies that feel like a more emollient version of Terence Davies. Some may feel that the film is sentimental or that it does not sufficiently conform to the template of political anger and despair considered appropriate for dramas about Northern Ireland and the Troubles. And yes, there is certainly a spoonful of sugar (or two) in the mix, with some mandatory Van Morrison on the soundtrack.” The Guardian

“Branagh has an easy way with a camera and isn’t afraid of sentiment, but he offsets this with a good line in comedy that cuts through the softer stuff like an astringent. . . Although this community would go on to be largely defined by strife in the eyes of the world for many years to follow, Branagh makes sure that what we chiefly feel is the love.” Eye for Film

“Dench, like the whole cast, is irresistible.” Evening Standard

Parish Hall Improvement – Internet Connectivity

While retaining its heritage value and historic charm the facilities available at the Parish Hall has moved into the 21st Century with the installation of internet connectivity. This project was driven forward by a small group of community volunteers, for which we thank and express our appreciation, and installed by OpenReach on a BT contract.  The project was completed on 24th December 2021.

The installation of the necessary infrastructure and equipment allows access to the internet which improves the facilities available for users.

Harvest Service – East Church – Sunday 3rd October at 11.15am.

This year due to the pandemic and the need to maintain social distancing we have reluctantly decided to cancel our usual Harvest Supper.

So instead we invite you to a beautiful celebration of our harvest in East Church. We will be singing hymns again so come and enjoy some old favourites and at the end of the service join us with a glass or two of something, enjoy a little light food and some good company.

It would help us to plan if we have some idea of how many might join us, so please email Ray Bassingthwaighte before the service.

As we have had to cancel this year’s harvest supper we are planning a Parish gathering next summer when we hope many of you will join us to celebrate our churches and community. More details to follow in due course.

Ray, Patrick and Charles.

An Invitation to Hear the Whole Story

You are warmly invited to a complete reading of Mark’s Gospel, at West Worlington Church on Saturday 25 September, starting at 2:00 pm. After 18 months or so in which life has been fragmented by the necessary restrictions associated with Covid-19, here is a chance to hear the full story of good news read by members of the congregation. The reading will take around two hours. There will also be a short interval, as well as refreshments at the end.

For further details, please contact John Rhodes (01769 580265).
